In Romania, hundreds of thousands of children are robbed of educational opportunities due to the lack of school supplies, since students must provide their own school supplies in order to attend class. Too many at-risk children forfeit basic education simply because they are impoverished.
A World Bank study of 10-year-old Roma children indicates 19% never have never attended school, 14 % discontinue attending school by the fourth grade, and the illiteracy rate is higher than 60%. As a result, half of all Roma children lose access to the future job market, contributing to the 90% unemployment rate among the Romani.
Our ministry seeks to fill in the gap for these needy students and eliminate this real obstacle by providing the necessary basic school supplies. It takes only $20 to provide a school supply kit that allows a child to attend a year of primary school. Together we can make a difference in breaking this cycle.
